UAB „Siemtecha“ has successfully implemented three repeated projects in the biogas part of waste water treatment plant. Namely in the cities of Vilnius, Šiauliai and Klaipėda.

Outdated biogas analysis systems were replaced with new ones on all three sites. The newly implemented systems guarantee a higher process safety and automation level, raise the energy efficiency level. What are the key benefits these systems bring to a plant owner?
Continuous process safety
Oxygen is introduced into biogas for removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Biogas is a combustible gas mixture, and when oxygen reaches specific concentration, it can become explosive.
The new biogas analysis system measures the oxygen concentration on a continuous basis and is responsible for:
- prevention of creating an explosive mixture;
- guarantying appropriate conditions for bacteria.
The predecessor systems were measuring oxygen on a periodic basis – the measurement lasted only 10 minutes in a 1-hour period, the remaining 50 minutes were assumed to be safe without measurement. This algorithm does not guarantee process safety and puts site owner into a “gambling” situation on risk of explosion.
The new system operates in a 24/7/365 mode, continuously monitoring the biogas composition and reacting to any change in an appropriate way.

Automated and effective measurement
The predecessor systems:
- were in need of a constant supervision from the engineer;
- were not capable of measuring concentrations in multiple process points – were not capable of stream switching;
- required a portable biogas analyzer and human effort.
The new system:
- Is fully automated – every single component of the analysis system is under continuous supervision, any malfunction is automatically reported to main control room;
- Allows stream switching – one analysis system automatically performs measurement on multiple points. Portable analyzer is not needed, human effort can be allocated somewhere else.
- Periodic calibration is performed automatically, engineers can perform other tasks.
Data based decision-making
Biogas is mostly used for production of heat and electricity. The amount of energy produced depends not only on the volume of biogas burnt, but also on the calorific value fo the biogas.
The new system:
- Analyzes the concentration of the main biogas components – CH₄, CO₂, O₂, H₂S;
- Calculates the biogas calorific value, which allows precise, data based decisions to be taken on utilizing energy resources.
This leads to effective site operation and optimized energy production.

“Green procurement” – investment into sustainable future
“Green procurement” – it is a conscious decision to choose environmentally friendly products and services that contribute to the goals of sustainable development, efficient use of resources, and reduction of environmental impact.
The previous biogas analysis systems exploited electrochemical sensors, which had a significant drawback – they wore out, and their service life was only about 2 years”.
In the new biogas analysis system, gas concentrations are measured:
- using the IR (infrared) absorption method
- using a paramagnetic sensor
their design lifetime spans up to 10 years. Solutions like this:
- Reduce the amount of waste and the need for replacement;
- Contribute to the goals of sustainability and green public procurement.
